Drink that provides water, and usually sugar,
in a flavoured form. Soft drinks include
fruit squashes, cordials, fruit crushes,
carbonated drinks, cola drinks, and ginger
beer. Fruit- flavoured drinks often contain
no fruit and are usually water, sugar or
artificial sweetener, and synthetic
flavourings. Tonic water contains no sugar,
but does contain quinine. In the UK,
undiluted fruit squash must contain
stipulated amounts of fruit or fruit juice.
Consumption in the UK of soft drinks rose
from 4,430 million litres in 1980 to 5,392
million litres in 1984. Most soft drinks in
the UK are sold in nonreturnable containers
despite mounting pressure for recycling.
